How to launch a foreign brand in Brazil in 5 steps

TL;DRTo launch a foreign brand in Brazil: 1) understand the category and Brazilian buyers, 2) check how your name sounds in Portuguese, 3) localize the brand instead of just translating it, 4) build a distributor kit and a Portuguese website, 5) launch with a campaign, content and WhatsApp. Brazil has about 203 million people (2022 Census, IBGE) and buys from brands it trusts.

The product is good, the price is competitive and the container is on its way. Even so, many foreign brands arrive in Brazil and stall: nobody knows the name, distributors don't know how to sell it, and the materials are in a translation nobody understands. Launching a brand is different from importing a product.

1. Understand the category in Brazil

Who the competitors are, what they charge, which channels they sell through and who makes the buying decision. Brazil has about 203 million people, according to IBGE's 2022 Census, and 26 states plus the Federal District, each with its own habits. A plan for São Paulo is not the same plan for Paraná or the Northeast.

2. Check your name in Portuguese

Before creating any material, test how your brand name sounds, reads and is spelled in Portuguese. A name that is hard to pronounce becomes a nickname; a name with a double meaning becomes a joke. Also check domains and social handles, and run a preliminary search for registration with INPI, Brazil's trademark office.

3. Localize, don't just translate

Translation changes the words. Localization changes the sales. Positioning, tone of voice, examples, units and arguments must make sense to Brazilian buyers, who buy brands they trust, in Portuguese.

4. Build the distributor kit and the website

  • A website in Portuguese, fast and clear, with structured data for Google and AI assistants.
  • A catalog and sales presentation designed for resellers.
  • Certifications and technical information required for your category, such as INMETRO, ANATEL or ANVISA, where applicable.
  • A WhatsApp service channel, where a large share of Brazilian sales actually happen.

5. Launch with a campaign, content and media

A launch campaign, paid media on Meta and Google, Instagram content, presence at industry trade fairs and press relations. Above all, someone on the ground in Brazil watching the numbers and adjusting fast.

A real example

ADE is currently launching OLINK, a Chinese EV charger manufacturer, in Brazil: market analysis, a new brand, a Portuguese website and a 12-month plan for government, businesses and solar energy integrators. We work with foreign brands in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and on WeChat too.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Chinese company sell in Brazil without a local office?

Yes, usually through local importers, distributors or representatives. A Brazilian marketing agency handles the brand, content and launch together with those partners.

How long does it take to launch a foreign brand in Brazil?

A launch plan usually runs 3 to 12 months, depending on the category, the certifications required and when the stock arrives.
